A Red Study Finish:Float frame In the foreground figures are'A Red Study', 1875. This cartoon shows Dr Henry Edward Manning gazing into the fire. Manning had in fact been one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. He had been made Archbishop of Westminster at the beginning of 1874, but in March 1875, Pope Pius IX created six new cardinals, one of which was Manning. He is depicted holding a cardinal's hat on his knee as he visualises the Papal crown in the flames
