A bit of research reveals that it is in fact a Victorian era invalid carriage --I've included an advertisement from the 1890s featuring one very similar

There are about 32 samples in one of the books and 18 in the other

The olive and brown stone of the marble one is really beautiful, and I especially love the gilding to the "pages" of the larger wood one. (And the three carved bands on the spines of both of those make them especially nice together.) I do
