I assume it was made in Japan for Western export

The lid is attached by nice hinges

I could not resist this old wooden wheel

with that round and deep lower half offset by its dramatically sloping lid which doubles as a handle

and great in the hand--I would probably hang it on the wall (probably via a couple of tiny nails between the teeth) or simply set it on a tray with a few other lovely and interesting things

This very phallic looking one bears a reddish stain, with an indent in the rounded top which seems as if made to meet a flat head screwdriver or coin in order to twist off the top, but I really have no idea! 3 7 8" t x 1 5 8" in diameter. Top slides over bottom and comes off easily. Early 20th century I would think.
